LL HG Geevarghese Mar Dioscoros – July 23 I 1926 – 1999

Geevarghese Mar Dioscoros was born on 12 October 1926, the youngest son of Kunjupappi and Achamma of the Thevervelil Family in Kozhencherry. After completing Intermediate at Madurai American College in 1948, he joined the Madras Christian College. He graduated from there in 1950 and took his master’s degree in Sociology from the Bombay School of Economics. He worked as the Secretary of the Co-operative Bank in Kozhenchery, in 1954. While undergoing the officer’s training course at the Reserve Bank of India he resigned and joined the Orthodox Theological Seminary at Kottayam for studies in Divinity, in 1958. He received the inclination and guidance to Holy Priesthood from Puthencav Kochu Thirumeni and from his ancestral parents.
He was ordained as a deacon in April 1962. and as priest, Rev Fr T E George in 1963 by Geevarghese Catholicos II, at Devalokam Chapel. In 1965 he went for higher studies to USA and in 1966 in theology at Jerusalem. He was the Vicar of Kurichy Valiyapally, Kottayam Cheriapally, Tazathuangadi Pally, Bahrain St Marys, Kochencherry St Mathews, Ranny Thottamon St Thomas and Ommallur St Thomas Churches. He served as the General Secretary of Orthodox Students Movement for 3 years.
In 1970, he founded the Holy Trinity Ashram in Ranni and opted to reside there. The major goal of the ashram is to create orthodox monks in the Church, instill the courage of selfless service in its members, raise the poor and establish educational institutions.
In 1973 he became the diocesan Secretary of Thumpamon. On 16 May 1977, the Malankara Association that met at Mavelikara elected him for the Episcopal order. He was consecrated as Episcopa Geevarghese Mar Dioscorus by Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews I, Catholicos of the East on 15 May 1978 at Pazhani Church. He became the first Episcopa of the newly formed Diocese of Thiruvananthapuram on 1 January 1979. On 28 February 1981, he was consecrated as a Metropolitan in the old Seminary Chapel.
H.G. Geevarghese Mar Dioscoros was the founder President of the Charitable and Educational Society of the Thiruvananthapuram Orthodox Diocese is a registered society established in 1991 for starting and managing institutions of higher education in Thiruvananthapuram. Society. H. H. Baselios Mar Thoma Paulose II, the Catholicos of the East, is the patron of the Society. The society runs Mar Dioscorus College of Pharmacy (MDCP), Sreekariyam.
HG Dioscoros always conformed to the laws and wishes of God, devout and pious with all endeavours on a divine prospective. Being the first Metropolitan of Thiruvananthapuram Diocese, Mar Dioscorus was fully responsible for the growth of the Orthodox Church in Thiruvananthapuram and establishing various institutes in Thiruvananthapuram for the poor and the destitute like schools, convents, and welfare centres.
Ranny Holy Trinity Ashram, Ulloor Orthodox Church Centre, Edamulaikal V.M.D.M Centre, Sreekariyam Handicapped Children’s welfare Centre, Thiruvananthapuram Holy Trinity School and Convent are all the fruits of his endeavours.
He passed away on 23 July 1999 and is interred in Holy Trinity Ashram, Ranny.
