Our Journey to Bethlehem – Day 19 I Jesus came to Give us a New Covenant
Our Lord Jesus Christ came into the world to restore and renew the Old Covenant and give us a New Covenant. The Old Covenant was between God and Israelites, through Moses. The commandments were given, Moses read the law, took the blood of the sacrificed lamb, and sprinkled it on the people, signified the deliverance from slavery.
The New Covenant is between God and man, through Jesus Christ. Here God renewed the old covenant. Jesus poured out his own blood, He was the Sacrificial lamb to give man a new communion and relationship with God, intended and aimed for the deliverance from sin. The New Covenant is a sacrament of Confirmation of our faith in Christ and Communion with God and union with man. The New Covenant (or New Testament) is the promise that God makes with humanity that He will forgive sin and restore fellowship with those whose hearts are turned toward Him. Jesus Christ is the mediator of the New Covenant, and His death on the cross is the basis of the promise. In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you” (Luke 22: 20).
Through the life-giving Holy Spirit who lives in all believers, we share in the inheritance of Christ and enjoy a permanent, unbroken relationship with God, a promise of Eternal Life in Christ. Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink (Jn. 6: 53-55). Jesus Christ is the mediator of the New Covenant (Heb 9:15; 12: 24). Every time we partake in the Holy Communion, we are renewing the covenant and confirming our faith in Him. We are declaring our faith in His Second Coming, which is awe inspiring and full of glory.
